A message from the Chief Executive

CHARLES BEGLEY

CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Unlocking economic growth is integral to build the Fairer Westminster that we all would like to see Westminster City Council deliver. This can only happen through the provision of best-in-class sustainable office space, decent homes, innovative retail and leisure experiences, and a vibrant West End.

Supporting and driving these essential ingredients to Westminster’s success underpin WPA’s busy programme of thought leadership, research, policy engagement and events. Through these, WPA advocates for your interests and works hard to champion the West End as a place of opportunity and prosperity.

This year we have published industry-leading research on topics ranging from central London’s role as a global economic centre; the impact of the Elizabeth line on London’s economy and built environment, and we are soon to publish our latest report on retrofit and redevelopment – an important follow on from last year’s Retrofit First, Not Retrofit Only paper. Also look out for our forthcoming report on London’s knowledge clusters later this month.

We lead the industry’s response to emerging policies and stand up for the sector when it is clear policy makers risk undermining the core ingredients which make Westminster such a unique place. We are a critical friend to the council, and whilst we may not always agree on everything, we must be able to have frank dialogue. With both regional and national elections approaching in 2024 we will continue to advocate to policy makers the critical role that infrastructure and development play in our cities.

When we come together in partnership we can be a force for positive change, as borne out by our joint work with Westminster City Council on the Sustainable City Charter. The Charter contains eight pledges for owners and occupiers to help reduce their impact on the environment. Almost 50 leading businesses and organisations with a combined floor space of more than 28 million sq ft have signed up so far – including many of our members. A further 70 businesses have expressed an interest.

This is a fantastic achievement and a testament to how seriously the industry is taking this important issue. We urge more businesses, especially from our membership and your customers based in Westminster, to join us on this important journey. Every business has a role to play, big or small, and participation is free and straightforward.

Our work is only made possible through your ongoing support and engagement, so I echo the Chair’s thanks to all our members, stakeholders, friends and partners.
